Reading your positioning view
Distance between two companies on the positioning view reflects a difference in claimed messaging, not a difference in quality.

What to look for
A crowded area means several competitors are describing themselves in similar terms. Competitors moving closer together over time means their messaging is converging, whether or not their products are. Open space means nobody is currently claiming that positioning.
This view is best watched over months rather than days. A single snapshot shows where everyone currently stands; the value is in seeing how that shifts. See Comparing positioning over time.
What it does not do
The positioning view does not tell you which position is winning. Being close to a competitor is not necessarily bad, and being in open space is not necessarily good. It shows where messaging sits, not how well it is working.
